Oncology

Tony Moore

(BVSc, MVSc, Diplomate ACVIM (Oncology))

Tony is an alumnus of the Sydney Faculty of Veterinary Science, receiving his veterinary degree in 1981 and a master's degree in feline hematology in 1986.

Five years in veterinary practice in Sydney led to an increasing interest in cancer therapy, and Tony found immense satisfaction in helping to improve the life-quality of pets with terminal diseases. He moved to the USA, and after completing a residency in veterinary oncology at the University of California, Davis, in 1988 he joined the faculty at Tufts University.

During his 15 years at Tufts, he established and directed the Harrington Oncology Program, achieved the rank of full professor, and trained seven residents to careers in veterinary oncology many of whom now direct oncology programs at veterinary schools across the USA.

Tony is also a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Oncology). He is the author of more than 200 articles, chapters and abstracts in the veterinary literature and has coauthored three books on veterinary oncology with Dr Gregory Ogilvie. He has spoken at meetings in Europe, South and Central America, Japan, Canada, USA and Australia.

Tony has received awards for creativity in teaching and clinical research and is particularly interested in the epidemiology of cancer in companion animals. After leaving Tufts in 2003 to return to Australia, he partnered with Dr Angela Frimberger (also an adjunct lecturer at the University of Sydney) to establish Veterinary Oncology Consultants, a web-based consulting company that supports the highest possible quality of life for pets with cancer through providing advice and educational materials for veterinarians and pet owners.

We are extremely fortunate to have the most experienced oncologists in NSW working with us at ARH.

Tony and Angela bring extensive experience in the management of pets with cancer, and allow us to provide Sydney's only truly comprehensive veterinary cancer treatment facility, in conjunction with the expertise of our surgical and medical specialists.

Cancers such as lymphoma, bone cancer (osteosarcoma), haemangiosarcoma, transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder, adenocarcinomas of the lung and bowel, mast cell tumours and various brain tumours are all far more treatable than they were 5 or 10 years ago. With an armourment of skilled surgeons, advanced chemotherapy and radiation therapy using a linear accelerator, much can be done to alleviate the suffering once endured by pets with cancer.

Consultations are available Tuesday and Wednesday by appointment only at Homebush.
